Volunteers in Winston-Salem raise money for oxygen masks for pets

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WGHP) – A local animal welfare group is hosting a fundraiser that will help firefighters save our furry friends.

A number of fire trucks from the Winston-Salem Fire Department carry pet oxygen masks. When Theresa Knops, a community educator with the fire department, was a firefighter, she used a pet oxygen mask to resuscitate a pet.

“It’s our job, our mission to save lives,” Knops said. “So saving the life of a pet or animal is just as important as saving the life of a human.”

Knops will never forget the moment she was able to bring joy to a family during one of their darkest days.

“It is a very heartwarming feeling to provide someone’s pet with oxygen and to see them react, especially knowing that they have lost their home, however, we were able to save their pet from company for him, ”Knops said.

Winston-Salem firefighters wear small, medium and large pet masks that cover the face and muzzle of cats and dogs. Knops explained how she is able to help a pet who might be confused, scared or unconscious. “I actually talk to them, I tell them like I would a human,” Knops said.

Over time, pet masks wear out, and mask replacement doesn’t come cheap. That’s why the Winston-Salem Fire Department is partnering with Fur-Ever Friends of North Carolina.

“For people who own pets, pets are family,” said Jennifer Tierney, a volunteer. “It is very heartwarming to see that our local fire department appreciates this fact.”

On Saturday October 23, Fur-Ever Friends of North Carolina will be hosting a fundraiser at Smokin ‘Harley Davidson in Winston-Salem. A Fun Day will raise funds for a number of programs, including money for new pet oxygen masks.

“The firefighters deserve our support on this, these firefighters have a heart too, some of them love animals like us,” Knops added. “It’s good that they have this item that we can provide to them. “

Fur-Ever Friends raised $ 8,000 the last time they held a fundraiser. The goal this Saturday is to earn more money to make sure every Winston-Salem fire truck has two sets of pet masks.

The fundraiser will take place on Saturday October 23 at Smokin ‘Harley Davidson, 3441 Myer Lee Drive, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There will be vendors, music and raffles. Pet adoptions will also be available. The event will take place from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
