NEW ULM – St. James came back from behind to beat New Ulm Silver 5-3 on Thursday in the VFW Second District Baseball tournament at Johnson Park.

Silver will now face Lake Crystal at 12 p.m. Friday at Johnson Park in the consolation bracket.

St. James got off to a quick start when Jack Westman posted the game’s first pitch to left field. Adian Viegel came in as a courtesy runner for Westman and Jesus Ilbriel hit a straight field single that scored Viegel giving St. James a 1-0 lead early on.

Kelien Bode and Parker Kamm shot back-to-back goals for New Ulm late in the third set. Zach Riederer hit a single to right field, scoring Bode and Kamm for a 2-1 silver. Logan Mielke’s single scored Riederer, giving Silver a 3-1 advantage.

St. James responded when Connor Jones doubled down in right field in the fourth inning. Garrett Parker’s brace brought Jones 3-2.

St. James sent seven batters to the plate in the start of the sixth inning. Ilbriel hit a single in right field. He stole the second and third goals. He scored on wild ground to tie it at 3-3. Jones had a triple on the fence in right center field. He scored on the fielder’s pick, giving St. James a 4-3 lead. Mason Lundberg reached on a single and scored on a costly money mistake for St. James’ 5-3 advantage.

St. James’ defense had a key play in the bottom of the sixth. New Ulm’s Kaden Wilson made a single and was second on a mistake. Wilson attempted to advance to third base on a Grounder, but St. James’s third basement scored Wilson for the second out.

Later in the inning, New Ulm’s Logan Kreilkamp reached on a mistake, moved up to second on fielder pick, but was struck out on third base. Those two strikeouts gave St. James the momentum he needed for the win.
