BEIJING (AP) — The United States has its first medal of the Beijing Olympics. Julia Marino was the silver medalist in women’s slopestyle, finishing behind Zoi (ZOH’-ee) Sadowski Synnott (SIH’-naht). Marino was in the lead heading into the third and final descent of the mountain before Sadowski Synnott became the first New Zealander to win a medal at the Winter Olympics.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Top-ranked Auburn barely extended its winning streak to 19 games, getting a late bucket to beat Georgia, 74-72. Wendell Green Jr. made a decisive layup with four seconds remaining to stretch the longest current winning streak in the nation. KD Johnson had a team best 20 points against his former team, and Green finished with 18.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State received 24 points from Marreon Jackson and 16 from Jalen Graham to outlast No. 3 UCLA 87-84 in triple overtime. The Bruins rallied to force overtime, survived Jackson’s 3-pointer late in the first extra period and DJ Horne’s corner 3 at the buzzer of the second. The Sun Devils led by 10 after a 21-4 halftime streak, but couldn’t put UCLA away.
UNDATED (AP) — Chet Holmgren had 20 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and five blocks to lead No. 2 Gonzaga to a 90-57 chokehold of BYU. Jaden Ivey provided 23 points and Trevion Williams added 19 as fourth-placed Purdue outscored Michigan, 82-76. TyTy Washington contributed 15 points and fifth-placed Kentucky held Alabama to 28 percent shooting in a 66-55 win over the Crimson Tide.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Deandre Ayton had 20 points and 16 rebounds in 24 effective minutes in the Phoenix Suns’ 95-80 win at Washington. Phoenix led by 25 heading into the second quarter and bounced back from the only loss in its last 13 games. Chris Paul added 14 points and nine assists for the 42-10 Suns, who lead the NBA overall standings by 2 1/2 games over the Warriors.
