EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man is in custody after a Silver City missing persons case turned into a murder investigation.
According to officials from the New Mexico State Police (NMSP), on Friday, October 1, they received a report of a missing person, Erica Zamora, who had not been seen or heard from since the September 26, 2021.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Office was called in to investigate the incident.
Through the investigation, officers learned that on the morning of Sunday, September 26, 2021, Erica and her husband, Armando Zamora went to cut firewood in the forest.
NMSP shares that, according to Mr. Zamora, they returned to his home and he dropped Erica off at his residence around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.
Officers learned that Armando was currently on probation for criminal sexual contact with a minor (under 13) and was wearing an ankle monitor. Using this information, investigators from the New Mexico State Police obtained the GPS coordinates of where Armando and Erica were chopping wood.
“A sergeant searched the area and located a dead woman matching Erica Zamora’s description,” NMSP officials said. “The woman has been declared dead by the Office of the Medical Investigator and has been identified with certainty as Erica Zamora.”
Agents interviewed Armando on October 3, 2021. During the interview, Armando admitted to beating Erica to death with an ax.
Armando was arrested and charged with one count of murder, and was held in the Grant County Detention Center without incident.
