Five ALCC-Joe Boxers Win State Silver Gloves Titles

DETROIT – Joe’s-ALCC Boxing Club took five boxers to the Michigan Silver Gloves Championships.

All five came back with titles.

The winners were Jeffery Venier, Ivan Hammock, Brett Bray, Ari Hunter and Jeremy Baumia.

Venior, Hammock and Bray all won unanimous decisions.

Venier was crowned 110-pound champion in the 13-14 division against Jacob Garbowski of Shelby Township.

“He looked good. Jeffery always looks great, ”said Joe’s-ALCC coach Todd Rigs. “Jeffery is probably the hardest worker in the gym. “

Hammock won at 125 pounds in the 11-12 Division, beating Detroit’s Talon Geck.

“This is the second time they’ve fought,” Riggs said. “Ivan beat him both times. Ivan is going to be my little Mike Tyson. He doesn’t back down.

Bray won the 106-pound crown in the 13-14 Division. He beat Preston Cyars of Lansing in the final.

“Brett looked really good,” Riggs said. “He threw a lot of good combinations and he was working on his defense. He did very well with that.

Hunter (132 lbs 13-14) and Baumia (60 lbs 9-10) were the only fighters in their divisions.

Venier and Bray will qualify for the regionals in Cincinnati from January 15-17. The others were not eligible since they fight in lower divisions.

Mason Drip Opener

NORTHVILLE – Northville scored 3 points with 2 seconds left to spoil Erie Mason’s season opener 49-46 and earn a berth in his own tournament final on Monday.

“Playing against that type of opponent only makes us better,” said Mason coach Kevin Skaggs. “We had some unusual turnovers that led to 8 points, basically giving them the game.”

Mason was finally able to play his first game of the season, but will not play his second game in this tournament. Since a team has retired, there will be no consolation game.

Chris Worden and Mark Sweeney had 10 points each to lead the Eagles.

Mason will make the final at the Junior College Tournament after beating Northville 36-30 on Monday. Jackson Icoangeli scored 12 points, Wyatt Knopp took 10 rebounds and Corbin Herrera had two free throws.
