Family Events in Silver City This Summer | News from Carson City, Nevada


Silver City, Nevada – Silver City’s annual summer STEAM activity program (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) began in 2004.

Kids’ summer events are open to kids and their parents from any city, and not limited to residents of Silver City.

The children’s portion of the STEAM summer program is organized by the Healthy Communities Coalition of the counties of Lyon and Storey (HCC). Visiting professors are experts in their fields who come from many different organizations such as University Nevada Cooperative Extension, Society of Women Engineers, United Way, etc.

In addition, local groups, such as the Silver City Arts Group, Evangeline Presents, the Silver City Historic Preservation Society, and others, also run summer programs in Silver City.

Below is a list of free events. Children must be accompanied by their parents. Each activity is designed for a different age group.

Tuesday, June 22 Music in the Park (10 am to noon): Bring your own lawn chair and enjoy an acoustic music concert for the whole family with Mylo McCormick, who was recognized for “Best Entertainment in Rural Nevada By Nevada Magazine in their “Best of Nevada.” Release. HCC staff will distribute the STEAM Summer Program and HCC’s Dandelion publication, a monthly newsletter listing resources in the Lyon area. resident artist in Silver City in partnership with HCC Silver City Park and Pavilion Stage, 395 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428.

Tuesday June 29 Multimedia art class with artist Angelia Leal. Limited to ten students aged 10 to adulthood. RSVP to [email protected] to reserve your spot for this course (location and time will be sent to you after your RSVP). Participants are requested to bring a surface for their art that is not a canvas (such as metal, wood, plastic, mylar, paper). Leal will provide materials such as paint, crayons, eggs and ink to create your own work of mixed art. Release. Sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in partnership with HCC.

Tuesday July 6 Visit of the permaculture projects in Silver City with the permaculture designer Canyon Cassidy. This tour is a special event for the people of Silver City. Space is limited. Locals can email [email protected] for location and time. Adults from other cities may request to be placed on a waiting list for other tours that may be offered to the public later in the year. Release. Sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City.

Tuesday, July 13 School Readiness Fun (10 a.m. to noon): United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra will host its annual Fair of School Readiness activities for preschoolers and their parents ( artistic and scientific fun, games and story time, plus free children’s book snacks to take home). Tuesday, July 20 Story Time (10 a.m.-12 p.m.): Dayton author Lisa Selmi will read her new children’s book, Oscar’s Big Adventure. Sponsored by HCC in partnership with the Silver City Volunteer Library. Lisa will bring copies of her new book to sign for those who would like to buy one and take one home. The library is located in the Silver City Schoolhouse Community Center at 395 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428.

Tuesday August 3 Engineering Mini-Camp: Annual robotics / engineering mini-camp for girls and boys ages 8 to 14 (with their parents) with the Society of Women Engineers and Nevada First running the camp. Limit of 24 students. RSVP to [email protected] for time and place. Sponsored in partnership with HCC. Release. Children will participate in an exciting SumoBot competition after writing a program to move their robots forward and backward and drive in a square. Then, they’ll build a robot “arm” and form teams to compete with their SumoBots!

Silver City is located in a federally designated historic site, 3 miles from Virginia City, 7 miles from Dayton, 12 miles from Carson City, and 30 miles from Reno and Lake Tahoe.
